Abstract
Home movie mostly shot in Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina (former Yugoslavia), depicting the extended Nogulich family visiting their homeland around 1970.
Description
This film begins in Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina around 1970, in the former Yugoslavia. A group of people exit the homestead of the Nogulich family, where Walter Nogulich's father Christ Nogulich grew up, and Walter spent time as a young boy, though he mainly grew up in the Chicago area.
The couple on the right at the beginning are Helen (in dark slacks) and Walter Nogulich (in a white shirt). The two women in dresses were Walter’s aunts (sisters of his father), Dobrinka and Dushanka. The young boy waving is one of the women’s sons, Golub. Then comes Jovanka, another aunt that Walter hugs and kisses. Her long-legged daughter follows. Then comes Velko (Walter’s uncle) and then his cousin Radmilo in an orange shirt, holding a camera. Wearing a green dress, Velko's wife Desanka comes in from camera left and embraces Helen.
The camera pans to capture some of the landscape across from the Nogulich home on the Trebinski River. Back to another aunt entering, Olga, shading her eyes. Walter's son Christ Nogulich, about 16 years old, dances the kolo (a traditional Serbian folk dance) with one of the aunts. They are fast and light on their feet.
The film then cuts to a bridge near the home, and some automobiles which they take to Dubrovnik (present-day Croatia), a nearby coastal city on the Adriatic Sea. Walter and Helen struggle with the rocks in the sea and end up sitting in the water, enjoying the warm and calm ocean. One of nephews approaches in a raft with son Christ. They wave, and the film ends.
The film was likely filmed by Dusan Nogulich, one of Walter’s cousins.
