Abstract
A documentary shot and edited by Bill Stamets and Janice Finney about Adjusting Through Acting, “an innovative workshop for Southeast Asian youths in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, designed to instill greater self-confidence adjusting to their new country.” Stamets has described Our Bamboo Gingerbread House as a film, “about Cambodian kids [whom Finney] helped to stage a quasi-therapeutic performance about surviving political trauma before arriving in Chicago.”
Description
As described in Stamets' voiceover, the workshop introduced Cambodian and Laotian kids ages 10-17 to theater games and acting techniques created by Janice Finney, a Chicago playwright and director. Adjusting Through Acting was sponsored by Travelers and Immigrants Aid and was supported by a neighborhood arts project grant through the Chicago Office of Fine Arts, and a Chairman's grant from the Illinois Arts Council. The Adjusting Through Acting workshop met twice a week from October 1984 to February 1985 in facilities donated by Truman College.
