Abstract
Loosely assembled footage primarily depicts a variety of press conferences with Ald. Ed Vrdolyak during his 1987 mayoral campaign. Shots include the following: Vrdolyak condemns a recent Chicago Housing Authority memorandum during a conference conducted outside a Cabrini-Green public housing building on January 27, 1987; Vrdolyak and city clerk candidate John Thomas, Jr. together push a dollied stack of voter registrations into the Board of Election Commissioners’ office on January 14, 1987; Vrdolyak criticizes Mayor Harold Washington, Jane Byrne, and Cook County Assessor and rival third-party mayoral candidate Thomas Hynes; Vrdolyak encounters general applause from traders at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on March 4, 1987; Ald. Luis Gutiérrez and Ald. Dorothy Tillman defend Ald. Helen Shiller’s commitment to her ward; a cook sits in a restaurant booth and compares local politics in 1983 to 1987; Mayor Harold Washington utilizes an automobile’s PA system to encourage nearby residents to, “Punch 10 tomorrow!”; Vrdolyak answers reporters’ questions in between spoonfuls of soup at Manny’s Deli; Vrdolyak attends a ballgame at Wrigley Field; Washington urges supporters at a CTA station to go vote; Vrdolyak provides his concession speech at the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel on April 7, 1987; the camera frenetically pivots back-and-forth across an array of monitors as each competing screen broadcasts a different television station’s coverage of the mayoral election results.
