Urban Gateways (was created by)
Urban Gateways was founded in 1961 by Jessie Woods, Charles Burns, Dr. Raymond Jerrems, Connie Williams and Helen Kolar. The organization sought to address the inequitable distribution of artistic exposure in Chicago-area schools, especially lacking for inner-city youth. The early Urban Gateways team focused on providing neighborhood schools with free tickets to attend musical recitals, orchestra concerts, operas, and theater productions. By 1964, Urban Gateways annually served 50,000 children in 25 schools, mostly by organizing school trips to arts performances and exhibits. In the 1970s, Urban Gateways implemented teacher workshops to educate teachers about utilizing arts in the classroom. In 1974, it began its artist-in-residence program. In 1983, the organization launched its Arts for Learning Program, which provided customized packages of creative resources to Chicago schools. President Bill Clinton awarded Urban Gateways the National Medal of Art in 1995 for its excellence in arts programming and as a national leader in arts education.
